Telegram's much better than WhatsApp
- Truly Cross platform: Telegram
has native apps for iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Windows Desktop, OS X,
Linux, Firefox OS and a web version. WhatsApp is trying to catch up
with their own WhatsApp Web, but it's seriously lacking in features -
you can't edit your status or picture for starters, and Whatsapp Web
only works with Android, Windows Phone, and a few Blackberry, Nokia
models at the moment (no iOS).
- Document sharing: You can share pretty much any sort of file on Telegram, not just photos and videos.
- No limit for Photos/Videos:
Speaking of sharing photos, you can only share 10(!) photos at a time
on WhatsApp. On Telegram, there's no limit. Telegram also supports a
maximum size of 1.5 GB for videos if I remember correctly.
- Usernames: You can set a @username so people can contact you without knowing your number.
- Secret chats:
On Telegram you can have end-to-end encrypted secret chats for maximum
security. You can also set a self-destruct timer for messages (à la
Snapchat, but for text messages, photos, videos, everything) while WhatsApp scored 2/7.
- Stickers: Don't
tell me you wouldn't want a Nikola Tesla facepalm sticker! All of their
stickers are free to use and you can make your own stickers if you want
to. They also recently added support for 3rd party sticker
- Free: Telegram doesn't have any sort of fee, unlike WhatsApp. They're also non-profit.
- Lots of innovative features: Integrated photo editor, GIF and image search directly from the app,
group size of 200, and much more that I can't remember because I take it
for granted. They keep adding new features regularly
- Open API and clients: All official Telegram clients are open source. You can build your own version of Telegram if you want to.
Not owned by Facebook:
Possibly the most important feature. Facebook isn't the nicest company
around. They conducted a 'study' on their users in 2012 by exposing them
to only negative or positive content to see how they would react. Not
the kind of people I'd want my messages in the hands of.
